That was a case of political retaliation.
I wouldn't necessarily characterize it as a loss of democracy. It's more an example of how the super-rich can bend the rules and retaliate against anyone they feel threatened by.
That isn't a new phenomenon... the wealthy have been pulling shit like this for hundreds of years. Thousands, really. After all... what fun is it to be super-rich, if you don't get to enjoy all of the shady privileges that go along with that wealth?
Anyway, the reason we're seeing such a massive uptick in these kinds of stories is because America is going through a period of change. Change for the better, in my opinion... but along the way, we're going to find ourselves embroiled in a major class war, the likes of which we've never seen before. Oh and it doesn't need to be a violent war... Gandhi proved that... but it will be very ugly in other ways.
