Trump was on an angry, delusional rant during much of the press briefing, trying to claim credit for the accomplishments of his predecessors and generally behaving like a furious Mafia thug.
At one point, a reporter asked a question of the Finnish president, and Trump interrupted. He ranted on and on, for about two or three minutes, essentially telling the world how great he is. Eventually, the Finnish president politely interrupted with "I think that question was meant for me..."
Remember when Trump was daring the Democrats to impeach him..? Well, look at him now. The man is obviously terrified and he's blindly lashing out at anyone and everyone that he feels is opposing him in some way. Pure paranoia and pure demagoguery -- right there on TV, for all the world to see. Not so brave now, is he..? ::)
The sooner they remove Trump and lock him up, the better. Any day now, he's going to cut loose with a rampage of obscenities and THAT is when the Senate Republicans will start thinking seriously of abandoning him. I've talked to some people who are "in the know" on this matter (how the hell my social network includes ex-officials at that level I have no idea). The President may have complete authority to launch, but the system is set up so that he can't do it capriciously. It's more like "Sir, we have the following options to respond to the threat" and the nuclear ones can only be authorized by the President. If he actually tried to order a nuclear attack on a whim, the SecDef and everyone else in the chain of command would be obliged to disobey an illegal order. From what I've heard, military staff at this level take this obligation very seriously. I think Mattis hinted that he would be willing to say "Sir, go fuck yourself" at an inappropriate nuclear order.

That's not entirely accurate. All presidents have had the "failsafe option," commonly referred to as "pushing the red button." The idea behind it is that we could be in a situation where we've already been hit and the Joint Chiefs and so forth could already be dead. The president could, in that scenario, launch a nuclear strike entirely on his own. At which point, it would come down to whether or not the guys in the silos and on the nuclear subs actually go through with it and initiate a launch.

The black briefcase with the nuclear codes is very real and it has a cable that can be attached to whichever official carries it wherever the president goes and they are never more than a room away. They give a whole song and dance as to explain that away.
The full letter can be viewed therein. The idea of Trump stepping down peacefully seems a little more distant than it did before, with him apparently deciding that his impeachment would be illegal.

The briefcase exists, yes. It exists so that a retailation can be launched within twenty minutes of a detected missile launch. All the briefcase contains are the codes for standard war plans against likely first strike adversaries (spc. Russia and China). I imagine the war plans are for counterforce strikes against Russian and Chinese ICBM silos, since countervalue targeting was abandoned by NATO/USA when Trident became accurate enough to score direct hits on missile silos.
However, the briefcase does not allow the President to unilaterally order a pre-emptive strike. Think of it this way - you need to know whose ass to kick before you start firing them off. If there was no imminent threat, the process would have to go through the National Command Authority - and in both cases, the Secretary of Defense needs to countersign the launch order.
It is also true that it is illegal for a military officer to obey an illegal order, even when the order originates from the President. An attempted unprovoked strike would likely never progress past the NCA. Mattis hinted at this several times - that if issued an illegal order from the President he would fulfill his oaths and ensure that order was not executed. Yes, he's not SecDef anymore, but I presume his replacement has similar thoughts.
Now, I still find it troubling that a man with the character of Trump has the sole authority to authorize a nuclear strike (I'd say the same of Vladimir Putin as well, to be frank). But he is not as close to the "button" as many believe.

That last sentence implicates Trump in the disappearance and possible murder of a 12-year-old girl named "Maria," according to the deposition. While most of the acts of sexual assault described within this document can no longer be criminally prosecuted, due to the statute of limitations having expired, murder and conspiracy to commit murder do not have any statute of limitations. Trump could potentially be looking at life in prison, depending upon what emerges from this trial when it finally goes to court.

It appears that the plaintiff ("Jane Doe") dropped and then refiled the case several times, due to receiving death threats. It also appears that the National Enquirer (AMI), who have long been allies of Trump, did everything that they could to bury the story.
The law firm representing her also claim that since filing this case, they have had their servers and e-mails hacked, by unknown parties.

I think it comes down to a matter of severity, in Trump's case. Bush and Cheney were accused of crimes that, for most Americans, seemed vague and remote.
But in Trump's case, we're talking about sex crimes... and we all know how bent out of shape most Americans become, when the subject of sex arises. Trump has been accused of raping, beating up, imprisoning and threatening the life of a 13-year-old girl. Incidentally, there's a very good chance that Bill Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg and several other high-powered creeps were involved in the same or similar crimes... so this could turn into a huge shit sandwich for everyone involved. There is no question in my mind that Jeffrey Epstein was murdered, as part of a huge cover-up. I also believe the plaintiff's claims that she's been receiving death threats for more than 20 years. So if Trump is complicit in ANY of this horrible crap, then he's looking at life in prison... or worse.

I should think that most Americans would embrace the progressive movement, if they took some time to learn about us. "Progressive" simply means to place a strong focus upon social progress, instead of the rather backward and oppressive ways that we've always done things in America. Social justice and equality has to be more important than corporate profits and tax shelters for the super-rich, elitism and bigotry of all kinds. As progressives, that's really all that we're striving for... and I can't imagine why any fair-minded people would be opposed to those values.

I think a lot of people have been trying to keep the 20th century alive for too long. And hey, I can understand it... the 60's, 70's and 80's were a fascinating time to be alive. Well, as of the time I post this, Biden has a huge 50-point lead in the electoral college... 264 for Biden, versus 215 for Trump.
The states still in play are: Nevada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.
For Biden to win, he only needs ONE of those states.
For Trump to win, he needs ALL FOUR of those states.
Nevada is indeed leaning toward Biden. In Pennsylvania, they still have something like 2.8 million mail-in ballots to be counted, which they didn't even start counting until today. It's a good bet that most of those mail-in ballots will go to the Dems.
So here's a "what if" scenario: let's say Biden wins Nevada and Pennsylvania... and Trump wins S. Carolina and Georgia. Biden would defeat Trump in the electoral college, 290 votes versus 246 votes. That's a big 44-point spread, which would (or should) completely eliminate any possibility for Trump to challenge the results in the courts. He clearly will have gotten his ass kicked. ;D

Mark Kelly is not likely to be super progressive (he is the husband of my former representative Gabrielle Giffords who was a member of the Blue Dog coalition before leaving Congress due to being shot in the head) but he is sure to be an improvement over that Trump-loving harridan McSally, for sure. 8)
He'll probably end up being ideologically similar to Kyrsten Sinema (the senior senator from Arizona) who is one of the most conservative Dems in the Senate (despite having started her political career in the Green Party and being openly bisexual). But even a conservative Democrat is better than any Republican. :P
Man, I hope we can win both those Georgia runoffs...and I hate that control of the chamber is that fucking close. Having Bitch McConman in charge of the next session would be intolerable - we need to get three new justices in the Supreme Court to counteract Trump's stolen seats and McConnell could and would block every one of Biden's nominees. And all he needs is ONE of those two Senate seats in Georgia to stay Republican and that's all she wrote, at least until 2022. >:(
