NEWS: 2 year old girl run over, dying, and ignored by pedestrians in China

This is about the sickest display of human callousness in the world.  A two year old girl is knocked down and run over by a van in China.  Several people walking and on scooters ignore the child as they travel past her slowly.   Another van coming down the street runs the girl over beneath its tires for a second time.  Eventually, a female storekeeper comes by, picks up the dying girl, and casually tosses her among some garbage bags on the side of the road.

Finally, a second woman comes by and tends to the little girl, before almost being hit by another van.

This wouldn't ever happen here in the USA.  Even in Manhattan where people tend to be pretty tough, 20 pedestrians would not just walk by a dying child in the road.  I just had two friends come back from a trip to China and describe the same thing. Watching people get killed on the roads is an everyday occurrence there. They were told to not look.

Things have always been this way in China. That part of the world has always been overpopulated, inbred and homogenized. So is it any wonder that their people have developed an anthill mentality..? As far back as you can go in their history, human life has always been cheap in China. Historically speaking, the Chinese people have often shown a callous disregard for the suffering of others... including the suffering of children. Girl children in particular were once thought to be almost worthless in China.

I remember seeing a disturbing photo in a book, many years ago. The name of the book was "The Best Of Life" and it was a huge collection of photographs taken from Life magazine. Well in that book, there was a photo which was taken in China... probably during the mid-1940's. It showed a young boy... who was obviously starving to death... sitting on the sidewalk and begging for food. He was holding a small bowl in his hand and his face looked very desperate and filled with suffering. His body was terribly emaciated.

And sitting right behind him... seated on a stool... was a fat, smiling Chinese rice merchant, surrounded by several huge sacks of rice.

This poor boy is STARVING TO DEATH and BEGGING FOR FOOD right in front of a smiling, fat pig who has TONS of food sitting right next to him. And yet, he didn't give the poor boy a single speck of rice to eat.

That's China for ya... the jewel of the Orient.

I wish I had a copy of that photo to show everyone, because it was a classic. I think it won a Pulitzer prize, if memory serves. It was a very graphic portrayal of just how cheap human life can be in China.

I've heard from various people that Asians in general, not just Chinese, are somewhat cold in some regards.

When you have too many people and virtually all of them are poor and powerless, life tends to become cheap. This is not a racial characteristic of Asians but a social phenomenon closely related to so-called "compassion fatigue" as well as the tendency of soldiers under fire for long periods to eventually become blasé about it. You eventually become used to appalling conditions and find it difficult to muster the energy to care about random strangers, when your own life and those of your own family and social circle are a constant grinding trial. It's very sad...and very human.

And that's why I said that if the plutocrats get their way, life will be like this almost everywhere. They will create a society in which 99% of us do not matter, and will spend our lives scratching for bare survival, with nothing left to spare for anyone other than those closest to us. Things were similar in medieval Europe and indeed, throughout much of human history in many places.

This is a cultural thing with the Chinese. You can go back as far as you want to into Chinese history, and you'll see this type of barbarism being repeated over and over and over again.

And I don't agree with your point. Your point seems to be saying that human decency is directly influenced by how much money we have... or conversely, by how much suffering we have. And yet, some of the most decent people that I have ever met are poor people who barely have a pot to piss in. It's the RICH fuckers who always seem to be the least altruistic. That's because most rich people are megalomaniacal thieves and parasites.

That photograph illustrates my point beautifully. Who is the least humane person in that photo..? The poor starving child..? Or the wealthy, fat merchant looming over him..?

You've forgotten the other aspect of what it's like to be downtrodden: CO-MISERY. And co-misery foments compassion... not apathy.

No, the Chinese are barbaric simply because their culture is steeped in callousness and cruelty. Shall we talk about Ling Chi next..? Foot binding..? When it comes to the subject of Chinese atrocities, I don't even know where to begin.

UPDATE: The girl continues to lie in a hospital, critically injured but alive.

The story has made it to the website "Chinasmack."  The comments written by Chinese internet users on the site have generated outrage worldwide.   Chinese citizens have stated that the reason they walk past accidents is because of a 2006 Nanjing ruling by a judge who blamed rescuers of being perpetrators of an accident and forced them to pay accident compensation.

WHY did I make myself watch this video?  FUCK.  As the father of two little girls, my blood pressure raised a full 20 points watching this video and I instantly began to have fantasies of beating the piss out of every single passer-by who pretended not to notice.  For a pretty cynical dude, this simply serves to fuel my already existing belief that the majority of Chinese people are raised to surrender their humanity for the good of the state to such a point where human life is simply a commodity that is lost as easily as it's gained.  Of course there's the, "Where are the parents?" argument, but my previous point covers that.  The parents were probably none too happy to be relieved of their burden.  People suck.

Can't see the image. Anyway, as of today there was about a calculation about... 4 million of chinese males more than females. Or 40 million, I'm not sure... Anyway, considering the human "standard" gender ratio is about 58% more women than men...
