DirectX 8 error?

Hello,
I downloaded VTMB from Direct2Drive last week and after reading about your patch, downloaded it as well. After patching from the v1.2 installation, running the True VTMB patch and the utility patcher so I could run in 1440x900, I started the game. Everything went fine as I went to character creation, but the game is crashing before actually getting to the gameplay. The following error appears once the engine loads:
Engine Error
failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer
I'm assuming this is some form of DirectX 8 error, but I'm uncertain as to how to remedy the problem as I'm running XP Pro SP2 with DirectX 9.0c. Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a solution?
Other relevant tech specs:
Intel Core2Duo E6750 2.66 GHz
6 GB RAM (3 GB accessible by XP)
nVidia 8600 GTS with ForceWare 191.07 drivers
Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help.

Download the True Patch again, and then re-install it.
I just released a revision to one of its files and it might help in your situation.
Refer to the following post for details:
http://www.tessmage.com/forum/index.php/topic,1112.msg58154.html#msg58154
If that doesn't help, then let me know and we'll see if we can figure out what else
might be causing your problem.

When I used to buy games through D2D you needed to download the patches for the games specifically from D2D for them to work with their games.
It has been a few years so I don't know if this is still the case.

Yah... but there's only one official patch for Bloodlines (version 1.2),
and the D2D version of the game already has that patch applied to it.

Strange...I got the game to load and run just fine for a while last night (played for about 1.5 hours), but now the same error is recurring. What's even more odd is that I just finished playing a game of Left4Dead, which also runs on the Source engine and has never once given me this error. I thought perhaps the problem had been resolved by a simple system reboot (which I did last night after making my original post), but obviously that's not the case.
So I guess it's back to square one. However, I'm going to table the problem for a few days, as I have a new video card on the way and I'm going to be upgrading to Windows 7 x64 Pro sometime next week. Might as well get all of that up and running and see if the error repeats under the new configuration.
Still, any insights are welcome, just in case I still get the error after the upgrade process is completed.

Have you tried removing 4 GB's of RAM from your machine (leaving 2 GB's installed),
and then testing it again..? Give it a shot and see what happens.
That is my primary suspect in your case.
But as you say... the plan is to upgrade to a 64-bit OS next week, anyway. May as well just wait until then.
Let us know how it goes for you.
